Special Guest Post: 5 Spring Must Haves & How to Makeover your Closet

I am so thrilled to have my sister as a special guest on Scout & Nimble, today.  Anyone that knows my sister, knows the girl can dress.  I rarely see her in the same outfit twice…seriously…I’m not exaggerating.  And the crazy thing is she hardly ever goes out and buys clothes for herself!  Are you wondering if my sister is a magician?  Well, she isn’t…but she is definitely talented in the style department.  She has such a way of pairing pieces together in unexpected ways.  Her closet is small, ya’ll, but it is full of basic pieces that she can mix and match to create endless options that never look the same.  Even her “dress down” clothes are adorable & still just as comfy as most people’s sweats and t-shirts.  The only difference is when she is out at the grocery store in her “dress downs”, she doesn’t have to apologize to the friend she runs into for looking a mess!  So, I asked her if she would mind sharing with Scout & Nimble her Spring must haves and essentials and how she recommends tackling the overwhelming project of cleaning out your closet.  This is what she had to say…so many great tips!  Thank you so much, Sarah!
Sarah with her wonderful husband, David
Hi, my name is Sarah, and I want to start by saying- I do not have all the answers…I just have some tips that work for me and since Jesse is my sister (and she tends to shop in my closet) she wants me to share.  Oh, and I am also a mother of two kids under 4, so I need outfits that are fast, can handle a stain, and fit within the budget that my sweet husband and I are on. So, I have narrowed down my top 5 Spring essentials to these basic things.
1.  The Maxi Dress

First things first, if you do not own a maxi dress, go get one stat.  This will be something you can wear all year long. The Gap has a great one called the “gathered maxi dress” that comes in five different colors that is currently on sale for just about $50.  It’s rayon jersey which is perfect with flip flops and “possibly” washed hair (remember, I am a mom of 2).  You can dress it up with tons of gold jewelry, a gladiator sandal or a metallic heel and it works for evening as well. Throw a button down shirt over it and belt the middle (I steal my husbands belts for this look) with a ballet flat and you are good to go for Fall.  For the winter months, grab a riding boot, a cable knit sweater and have a serious Ralph Lauren moment.  This will wind up being your “go to” dress.
2.  The White Pant/Jeans
White jeans are the best, but MAN people are afraid of the glory that is the white jean. Listen, go to Old Navy they have every size and shape of white jean and find the one that works with your body shape.   Practically everyone looks lovely in a boot cut pant.
Old Navy wont break the bank and they will ease you into what will most certainly become a love affair.  If you have kids or tend to attract food when wearing white, just know a little bleach and your good to go. You can hit the grocery in these paired with a black tank and red flip flops, big silver hoops and hair in a bun….perfect movie moment.
For evening, pair them with a striped tee and a black blazer & any color of heel.  I am in love with pairing a striped top with an animal print heel, too.  I love that look.  And take these jeans into fall (cause as long as they aren’t linen you really can wear white all year around).  Throw some tall boots with them and a denim button down…perfect for fall.

3. The Black Blazer
Really just get any black blazer.  I love my “boyfriend” blazer that I got at the BCBG outlet, but I realize that a baggy style does not work for everyone.   H&M has a great selection of blazers at seriously crazy prices.
Another great resource online is Zara.  The reason I think this is a must have is because you can throw it over a silk dress and make it immediately more causal or throw it on with skinny jeans and a white tank and you are a bit dressier.  It can take the place of every hoodie or cardigan and its equally as comfortable.
4. The absolute 3 essentials:  The White Tank, Black Tank, and White Button Down
Let me ask you a question?  How many white or black tanks do you own and how many white button downs are hanging in your closet?  Everyone needs their perfect three…that’s it.  Just three, this can be a quest.   Go to Ann Taylor Loft, try and hit the sale rack….it can be life changing.  You want a non-ribbed slightly longer tank that has a little micro fiber for fit.  You can literally wear these two colors with anything.  The same on the white button-down, take the time to find the one that works for you.  I say stay away from anything too trendy….a classic white will always be in style.
Here is the same shirt above shown in black…you can see the fit is just perfect.
Ann Taylor Loft also has a great one for under $40, here.  Wear it open with leggings and the white or black tank paired with a ballet flat and it’s a comfy, yet, sexy Sunday look.  Tuck it in with pin-striped pants and a heel for office wear.  I have even been known to steal one of my man’s ties and have a total Annie Hall moment.
5.  The Nude Shoe
The nude shoe is my new favorite thing…..it’s a neutral that will not only make your legs look like they go on for days but they work with almost everything.  Wear your new white button-down with the white jeans, throw on the blazer and finish off the look with a nude peep toe heel and you are set, my friends.  Here is my thought on the finish…go with the matte over the patent leather.  The patent nude is a little too trendy whereas the matte is so classic that it will last in the long run.  If you are really wanting to do a patent shoe for the extra shine, go with something classic in black.  That will never go out of style and the sheen can totally change the whole look of an outfit.  Here are a few that I found that are affordable.  Click on the “via” to get to the retailer.
If you are not a heel person, you can still pull of this look with a nude ballet flat like this one
Ok, so that is my top 5!  A couple side notes:
  • Get hoops in gold and silver….they go with everything
  • If you are ever in doubt about what you are wearing think to yourself, would anyone think I was going to a costume party as a “cowboy” “hippie” “belly dancer” etc…?  If the answer is yes, take a couple things off.  You don’t need the hat, belt, boots and rhinestone tank to prove you know how to line dance.
And because my sister is all about tutorials, I thought I would explain how I recommend going through your closet because here is the thing I’ve noticed…most people have too much stuff.  Too much stuff to do, too much stuff on our minds, too much stuff to love, collect, be apart of and for sure too much stuff in our closets.  I love going through someone’s closet and helping them make sense of the madness.
***Be sure to set aside an afternoon before taking on this project, there is nothing worse then getting interrupted in the middle of this.***
Things you will need:
  • 2 large Rubbermaid containers
  • trash bags
  • hangers (I like to use these, but any hanger will do)
  • a good friend who will tell you the truth about whether or not you should be keeping certain clothes (optional)
  • Cocktail (optional, but I highly recommend one)
First, take everything out of your closet. EVERYTHING!  It is scary, but so worth it.  Every piece of clothing is going to be placed in one of 3 piles: the “keep it” pile, the “I love you, but I haven’t worn you or been able to fit into you in a while” pile, and the “I don’t love you anymore or why the hell did I buy you” pile.
The “I don’t love you pile” should go into the trash bag to be donated or sold at a second hand store.  The “I love you but haven’t worn you” pile should be placed in Rubbermaid containers, dated and tucked away in your attic or basement.  I believe in holding on to stuff for one year and then revisiting it.  It can be like Christmas if you fall back in love with any of the items and if it is at all like a nightmare, well, you have more stuff to donate or sell.
On to the keep it pile…..I like to have winter and fall on both ends of the closet and spring & summer in the middle….I find that it lets your eye move easier when you have all your heavy stuff on one side, not to mention it can sometimes be hard to move or see past it.
I also don’t believe color coordinating the entire closet.  But do notice if you have a “go to” color, like, for example, if every other thing in your closet is pink, maybe it’s time to try a new color.  I have a serious love for stripes, I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame, but I realize a closet full of stripes does not make a wardrobe.   I tend to put “like” styles together…that is the best part of the Real Simple hangers they allow you to hang “like things” together in a row so it takes up half the room, but still allows you see them.
Finally, take inventory of what you have and what your closet might be missing….I am a total nerd and I always jot it down somewhere, so the next time I go shopping I can have it fresh in mind what my closet lacks and stay away from any striped items that I might be drawn to.
Well, I think that about covers it!  Good luck tackling your closets.  It is one of those projects that once you finish it, your whole outlook will change.  And considering it is something we look at everyday, I believe it is so important.
Thank you so much, Sarah!  I’m thinking you need to come over and help Sam & I with ours, like, pronto…I’ll have the wine waiting ;)
***By the way…for anyone here in Columbia, my sister has started providing the service of helping people go through their closets.   She will come in, help you gain a fresh take on your closet by coming up with different outfit combinations and weeding through the stuff that needs to hit the road.  She provides this service for men and women and will even help guide you in the right direction for your future shopping trips.  I mean, don’t we all wish someone would come in and do that for us!?!  If you would like her help (incredibly reasonable), click the “email me” button in the right sidebar.***

A lil Thursday Thrifting

I just had to share some treasures that I found today while thrifting at our Goodwill…love that place.  There are a ton of places to go to here in Columbia, but I only had about 30 minutes to kill so I hit the closest one to me…

Score #1

I have a thing for owls…I think our whole family does & I am seeing them everywhere so apparently the rest of the world does, too.  As soon as I saw this original owl print, (at Goodwill for $3???!!!) I knew he was coming home with me.  It must have been my lucky day because when I got home and googled the artist, I found out that Charles Schwartz was one of Missouri’s finest and nationally recognized wildlife artists.  I loved reading that he and his wife met while attending University of Missouri (my alma mater).

Score #2

This is the cutest little end table and will serve perfectly as Henry’s new bedside table for his big boy room.  I have some exciting plans for this lil $20 find. Solid wood, too, and in great shape. I couldn’t find a single scratch or blemish on this dude.

Score #3

These were the first thing I noticed when I walked to the back of the store.  A set of 8 hammered grayish amber drinking glasses.  How’s that for a description, huh?  But, they are gorgeous, in my opinion, and for a $1 each?  Ummm….ya, I’ll take them.

Can you tell I’m having a ball with my new PictureShow App?  If you like taking pictures and playing around with effects, I highly recommend it.  It’s less than $2, too!

Stay tuned to see what all I do with these finds.  I know, I know…more projects…well, at least the drinking glasses don’t need any work, right?  Have you found any great steals lately???  What stores are your favorites for thrifting?  That is, if you’ll share your secrets!

A Boxwood Wreath Tutorial: Who knew a little sprucing up could create this?

I had no intention of making a fun lil Spring wreath even though it was something that I had always wanted to have in the past.

Every year around this time, we head out to a nursery to get some pretties for our planters out front.  I love to have little punches of color in our planters and every year we do something a little different while we anxiously await for the hydrangeas, knock out roses, and lilacs to begin blooming in our front garden.  Sam and I are notorious for going out too early and purchasing all of our flowers only to have to protect them from the big bad frost that always creeps in after our flower shopping spree.  But when everything starts greening up, I can’t help myself from taking my planters from blah to bangin.

This year was no different…we went to THE BEST place to get your flurs (as Henry likes to call them)

If you live in or near Columbia, you have to visit this place.  Flowers as far as the eye can see.

They appear to go on forever.  Seriously, it is amazing.  This is one of those places where one wouldn’t even have to pay me to work there…although, I don’t necessarily have the greenest thumb so they may not want me there putting all of their beauties at risk.   I am trying to learn, though, because everyone else in my family was blessed with a gardener’s gene and the last thing I would want to do is tarnish my family’s name…I mean, c’mon, right?

These guys below were eyeing us from the moment we walked in the greenhouse so we got 3 of them even though we were told that they could be a touch fickle…

We rushed home with our goodies and got busy “springifying” our front.  Sam thought that our three boxwoods needed some trimming so he got to work.

Our little angel who sits between the boxwoods got covered…it was as I was taking this picture of her with her little blanket full of trimmings, that I thought why not recycle these into something?

So take the leftover trimmings, toss in some yellow spray paint, add a wood letter or some fabric and, hot diggety dog, you’ve got yourself a fun Spring wreath with some color that packs a little punch.

If you are wanting to duplicate this for yourself, here is what you will need:

  • boxwood trimmings
  • wreath (I used the straw wreath ~$4)
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • spray paint in any color that screams Spring to you
  • wood letter in a size that fits in the center of your wreath (I had this “B” sitting around forever just asking to be used for something)
  • something to tie the letter to the wreath (in my case, I used fishing line because it was sitting in our garage with all my husbands fishing gear)

First, I took all the boxwood trimmings and laid them out on a drop cloth in our garage to dry out for a day or two.  They were such a beautiful green and I really wanted to leave them as they were, but was too nervous that they would start to brown.  So after a couple of days, I sprayed them lightly in some yellow spray paint….Kyrlon’s Sun Yellow in gloss to be exact.  I did the same to the straw wreath.

Once everything is dry grab your hot glue gun and start gluing the trimmings on around your wreath.

I just kind of lined them up at an angle and filled in spots as I went.  After burning myself one too many times, I ended up using a glue stick to hold the pieces in place while the glue dried.

This part took me about 45 minutes or so…I was only concerned with covering the front and sides of the wreath because I knew it was going to be hanging against the door.  But, you can do as you wish.  There were a few holes that I was easily able to go back and fill in.

You don’t have to limit yourself just to a wreath either, they had some great topiaries at the craft store that would have been so fun to do as well.

Once the wreath was full enough in my eyes, I did a couple more coats of spray paint making sure I got it evenly at all angles.  Then I took my letter B and spray painted it in a fun lavender blue because I had that color on hand.  Once everything was dry to the touch, I tied it around the center and hung it on the front door.

I may have to go back to Strawberry Hill and get a couple more yellow flowers to tie everything together.  You know how I like to coordinate.  I have no idea how long this baby will last, but it has a way of bringing a smile to my face every time I see it so it’s worth it, right?

I will be sharing this over at the fun party that Whitney and Dustin host…they are such a fabulous duo and I dig their blog…

25 insights into this Scout & Nimble girl

I am in the midst of project overload so I thought it was time for another 25 things…

  1. If I am ever walking after it has recently rained, I, for some reason, feel like I need to save all those dumb worms that look stranded in the middle of the dry sidewalks to prevent them from dying what I imagine is a horrible death.
  2. I have no idea if I am doing them a favor by moving them back to one side of the sidewalk into the grass…who knows maybe they were trying to get across to the other side of the sidewalk where their families are patiently waiting?  Does anyone else do this or think this way or is it just me?
  3. And yes, I’m sure I look crazy stopping every 5 seconds to save a silly worm.
  4. I’ve always considered myself to have a great fairly good memory so I often wonder why it is such a process for me to leave the house…it takes me getting in the car only to run back in the house 5 different times for something else that I forgot.
  5. Once again, yes, I’m sure I look quite ridiculous doing this, too…
  6. My son on the other hand can get in a bed full of “his toys” and without so much as a glance, realizes that goblin or turtle is missing and then he can tell me exactly where said toy is…like, “on the side of the bathtub in your bathroom, mama” or “in the car under the dinosaur book”….I mean, really???
  7. Maybe I should give him a list of everything that needs to walk out the door with us so I could end the “car to house” daily dash routine that I am currently doing.
  8. My favorite product right now is…da da da DAAA The Vitamix!  Surprise, surprise…I.seriously.cannot.stop.talking.about.this.machine.what.is.wrong.with.me?!!
  9. Every night before bed, I eat a spoon full of almond butter. This guy said that it could make 4 hours of sleep feel like 8 hours of sleep…don’t ask…something to do with blood sugar, but bottom line…I’m happy to say, it works.
  10. Why couldn’t anyone have shared that piece of information with me when I was up all hours of the night feeding babies?  New moms take note.
  11. I have not a single tattoo…not because I don’t like them or anything…it more or less has to do with me not being a superfan of needles.
  12. I love getting lost in a great book…I just recently finished The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (which was a good little read) and I am currently reading Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo and Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell…only because someone recently gasped at me when I said that I had never read it.  <ugh…peer pressure>
  13. All I am hearing about, though, is The Hunger Games…until recently I had no clue what this even was (try to withhold your gasping)…so tell me this…am I missing out?  What’s all this craze about?
  14. I love coconut anything.  One of my favorite drinks is coconut rum with coconut juice. Not only is is oh so low cal, but the potassium in the coconut juice helps prevent you from feeling hungover the next day…brilliant, I say!  **Warning…not for someone who doesn’t love coconut-ey things…Sam calls this suntan lotion in a cup, but I think it is absolutely perfect, light and refreshing.
  15. Since we are on the subject of spirits…I am a huge fan of wine, but, deep down, I am a beer girl through and through.  Being born and raised in the Midwest can do that to you, I guess.
  16. I am completely over painting our living room.  It’s not that it is really that hard, it is just so time consuming.  This probably isn’t a good thing considering I have the 20 foot high wall along the staircase to do next.
  17. I might freak if I don’t finish by this weekend.
  18. You’re asking why I don’t hire someone to finish it?  Well, I have this little math equation that I do in my head whenever I start a new project.  The equation takes into account effort, time, $, skill, etc…and helps me make a decision whether to do it myself or hire someone to do it for me.
  19. I’m now thinking there is a flaw in this equation…it may need some tweaking.  Boo.  Maybe I will hire someone to do the wall that seems to go on forever.
  20. You’ll never believe what I did to myself the day I took the boys to the park… ***WARNING…if you don’t like looking at pictures of bruises, avert your eyes from this next pic…***  And please, not that you would, try to refrain from zooming in on this picture.  My leg was so sore that I didn’t even shave this day…gross, I know.
  21. Thank God I was alone because A.  it didn’t look pretty when I did it and B.  I probably would have for sure started crying if anyone had asked, “are you okay???”.    Looking back I think I forced some air out of my lungs and thought, did I just break my leg?  Total Dale move, I tell ya.  For future reference, don’t try to climb the metal swirly thingy at the park when your shoes are slightly damp.
  22. Then because I am a bit of an anxious person, I worried for the next couple of days that I was going to suffer from a blood clot.
  23. And I will have to cut this short because I am hearing my boys start to wake up from their naps and I promised them some Orange Leaf frozen yogurt when they woke up.
  24. This is also the same place where Henry told someone with Tourette’s Syndrome that she wasn’t going to get any ice cream if she continued screaming…and you know kids, they do not have a quiet voice so really he told all the customers…slightly uncomfortable, but I had just talked to him about not screaming when we were out in public…what are the odds?
  25. Fingers crossed that they have the coconut flavor today…

Crafting with kids: Easter Edition

On our latest adventure to the giant place of wonder and fun…aka Hobby Lobby…what?…not the place you were thinking, huh?  (Please excuse that giant mess of a sentence…I am, rarely, if ever, grammatically correct.  I know this.  I’m aware.  It doesn’t bother me and if it bothers you, just take it as a compliment that you are probably a lot smarter than me….<smile>.)

So what did my little eye spy while roaming the aisles of Hobby Lobby?  These adorable little paper mache eggs for 30 cents.

I had intended to dye eggs with the kiddos again like we did last year, but wait…no I was on to something here.  Perhaps this could get me out of the dying this year.  Does that sound bad?  Well, let me explain, you see, my kids like instant gratification. I mean, who doesn’t, right? And the whole dipping the eggs in cups and waiting for them to change colors wasn’t necessarily their cup of tea.  Not to mention, that at the end of it, I had a bunch of brown eggs because Henry wanted to dip each egg in every color.   All that work for a bunch of brown eggs?  Ha Ha…not this year!

So, I did what any normal person would do…I crazily threw egg after egg into my cart, grabbed a carton of glitter and was outta there…of course I used my 40% coupon for the glitter…c’mon…it’s too easy not to.

Now, most people could probably look at the picture above and go ok, they painted those suckers with acrylic paint and then glittered them up all fancy.  And that is exactly what we did.  But, if you like details (you are after my own heart), you will need eggs, paintbrushes, acrylic paint (I have an insane amount of this stuff at home), mod podge, glitter, and a clear coat finish spray paint because who really likes glitter all over their house.

Now, I’m not going to lie…this is no less messy than dying Easter eggs…in fact it could be messier.  Before I got the kids even thinking about what we were going to do, I got a tablecloth on the table, put the eggs in a basket, had paint brushes galore ready to grab, accessible paint, a roll of paper towels, aprons, wipes, pretty much have anything you think you might need close to you.

It will make it so much easier on you if you are not having to run around like a crazy person when your kid does this.

I swear he did it right as I snapped the pic…notice the blurry pic, I was already in motion to help him out.  I, of course, immediately set the camera down, got him cleaned up and checked to see if I needed to do an eyewash like I had to do in college in one of the chemistry labs…mortifying, I tell ya.  Thankfully, he was all good.

And as soon as the kids realized what was happening they were thrilled…

And, before I knew it, they were off painting…

Henry has has these transportation molds forever and has been anxiously waiting to gussy them up, so he did those first.

& concentrating…

And like any good artist, they occasionally would have to pause while letting the mind search for inspiration…

and, other times, they just kind of went with it…even without looking

I don’t think Henry really even said a word…he was having so much fun.

They definitely had a blast and this whole thing entertained these two wild boys for a whole 2 hours…not joking.  They loved it.

And for not even $10, that made this momma happy.  Plus, we can save these from year to year.  I even got in on the fun and made some ombre eggs…

inspired by this Ombre

Very Easter-ey and Spring-ey, huh?

Now, here are the boy’s first trial eggs which I love.

After these, I had to set the camera down and be a little more hands on to get to here.

It would even be cute to put the years on their eggs so you could save them and pull them out every year. Or even attach a little ribbon to each egg and make your own little Easter egg tree, like Maaaaartha (said in a very sophisticated voice, of course).

Fun little project to do with the kids, endless possibilities.  And even if you don’t have kids, I would still consider this fun.  But, hey, I am someone who gets excited to purchase these

and a package of these

Umm…these two things might be better than shoes for me…what’s sad is that I’m not kidding.  Now that I’ve shocked every woman reading, I’ll end it there.  ;)

Ready to commit

I think I am finally ready to commit…

image via

to some wallpaper. Serious subject, right? I have been contemplating it for awhile now, but always manage to chicken out right before ordering.

I think the fact that I am only looking at doing an accent wall in Henry’s room is working to my advantage. It’s not like I’m covering a whole room. But, I am having some trouble narrowing down my choices…who wants to help?

The only thing that is permanent in his room right now is his bed frame which I have painted in orange, Annie Sloan’s Barcelona Orange, to be exact.

So, we know we are working with a pop of orange.

All of these wallpapers are from Antonina Vella’s Contempo line. You could find these anywhere, but if you are in Columbia, go up to Johnston Paint & Decorating…they carry everything!

Ok, so option #1: LAVINIA (images via )

with a light brown background

with a camel color background (looks more orange here)

and the one I’m leaning towards…with the bluish green background.

I think this might be my favorite because I love this picture that is featured in the book

I think this print is fun and boyish, yet it can go a little glam, too. She’s versatile. Right up my alley…

Option #2: FRANCO

in the olivey green and gray

in black & white (this is a close second)

and in blue & brown

Option #3: RINA

in brownish taupes

in creams and greens

and in blue.

All of these are priced somewhere between $65-$96 per roll, but the best part is that Johnston Paint & Decorating has them marked 40% off until the end of March and since I’m just doing an accent wall, this shouldn’t be too pricey. So, I have approximately 10 days to make a decision…anyone want to help a girl out? Leave me a comment with your favorite out of the selection or your top 3…if you hate them all, tell me. I’m not afraid…

And if you are in the market for some wallpaper, definitely check out Design*Sponge’s top 50 wallpaper sources and get ready to spend some time online!

Spoiled

Is it just me or is anyone else feeling spoiled with all this gorgeous weather?  Here in the Midwest, it has been in the 70′s and even hit 85 degrees yesterday.  For March, this is a rare thing.  To think less than a month ago, we were doing this

And now?  I mean look at these Bradford Pears saying hello.

They are, by far, my favorite tree with the weeping willow coming in at a close second.  I mean, who could look at those beautiful blooms lining the street and be in a bad mood?  Well, I suppose someone who has terrible allergies might feel a touch different, huh.

So with this nice weather, we have taken full advantage spending our days outside playing, at the park, and at one my favorite places in Columbia, Shelter Gardens.

The boys love running around here

and it was fun to go and see all the little splashes of color popping up

There is just so much beauty & inspiration inside this little place…

If I am ever having a hard time organizing my thoughts or need a breather, this place is always first on my list…it is magical.

And can make you feel like you are in your own little world

The fact that this beautiful place is where my sister and her husband exchanged their vows and “i do’s” may have something to do with my love of the area.

Henry, my little photographer, even captured a picture of me on this day.

Don’t you just love kid’s perspectives?  Here is one where he actually was able to capture the top of my head.

I must say, though, with all this beautiful weather…not much has been happening on the project front.  I am nowhere near finishing painting our living room.  And for those of you who are wondering, Sam did eventually figure it out…totally my fault…I left the computer out with my blog page open free to read.  I came out from putting Oliver down and he was already halfway through the post.  Shame on me.  Would it be bad to say that this little fact has taken some of the fun out of painting the room?   Maybe it will rain and force me to stay inside and paint…not that I am wishing for bad weather.  Until that happens, we will be doing a lot of this

and this

Bottom line…we are just going to thoroughly enjoy getting spoiled.
